Cramps, cramped, crampy, cramper, crap

Posted on | February 23, 2008 | 14 Comments

I had big plans to drag the teenager with me out to Akron to attend the Barack Obama rally this afternoon, but a certain *friend* came to visit and the news reports kept upping the expected number of people going to this thing. First 10K, then 12K, then 15K and last report was 20K or more. Aunt Flo and I would not survive that kind of a crowd, so we’ll be looking for it later on YouTube. Just the parking logistics makes me want to stick my head in the oven.

Speaking of ovens, I’m going to give Jim Lahy’s no-knead bread recipe a try tomorrow because El’s photos made me salivate. Just look at the texture she achieved with her bread, the surface is so gorgeous. I’m pairing that with a traditional ragu and a fat salad for Sunday dinner. If I ever get up off of this chair and step away from the heating pad. My lower back has a second degree burn from sitting against it all day.

Did I mention that I have the house to myself right now? The sun is streaming in the windows and my to-do list is a mile long, but I just can’t bring myself to do anything. I’m too spaced out to even sit down and read, but I really should turn off the computer and enjoy the quiet. I wish you could hear how loud my CPU fan is right now. It’s insane. It’s making me insane.

Tomorrow will be much better and I plan to:

• start some seeds (onion, leek, cabbage, broccoli, brussels sprouts, kale, collards and lettuce)
• make some kind of cupcake for dessert
• more laundry
• write a letter
• read up on my baking chemistry

Right now I’m going to go pour myself a glass of wine, slice some cheese and an apple for crackers and start that bread dough so it can do the 18 hour rise.

Also, I’ll give myself a break. So what if it’s sunny? So what if I could/should be doing any one of a thousand things with my free time right now? I’m drained and have a busy week coming up, so it’s a rest and recharge day. It’s only frittered away if I regret it, right? So I won’t.

What are you doing this fine Saturday afternoon?

Wondering if I’m faking being sick. How ridiculous is that?! I have been wanting to try that bread–can’t wait to hear how it goes.

Oy, I am in pain too but mine is self-inflicted (scotch on top of wine last night: what in the world was I thinking?). The ragu and bread sound just fabulous. I’ll probably pair the bread with a simple stew tomorrow night. You’ll like the bread: it will be small enough for the 4 of you to polish off!

Good luck getting off the couch tomorrow and seed-starting!

I was at the studio making Little Blue You KnoW Who’s. #2 daughter was home sick—-she probably caught what #1 daughter brought home from NYC last week. We’re off to Grandma and Grandpa’s to celebrate G’Pa’s 86th b.d.
    That is a long life.

Staying out of the weather. Putting another log in the stove. Reading Lash’s “Not in His Image.” Picking out stitches from the zipper attempt on the skirt I’m sewing. (Put that zipper in twice already! Hoping that third time’s the charm). Left overs from yesterday’s roast chicken, sandwiches and a raw salad for dinner.

John and Sahela are in the cabin too. Close quarters but we give each other a lot of mental space and get along fairly easily.

I am amazed by the Obama phenomenon. I’d like to see him but I get claustrophobic in big crowds, and probably would have skipped it as well. Sounds like you are having a good day with some solid personal time.

I am very glad to be postmenopausal. I stopped early, at about 45. I mourned the loss of my cycle until, I came to notice that I was no longer as subject to hormonal moods. That was something I hadn’t considered and was a welcome surprise. And no longer needing to worry about birth control. Huge relief.

Well, it’s Sunday now and I’m going to have to do what you did yesterday because we were out way too late last night. And I hear you about the long list of things to be done! But we have another supper out tonight so think I might even have to take a nap!

I’m with Lisa, past the whole monthly doo-dah…truly very nice, have to say. Like being a kid again! Hang in there!

I have made that bread* and that bread has made me feel like I can really, truly bake. Fabulous, fabulous, fabulous. I keep looking around to see who else could have possibly made it.

Yesterday was all PTO Carnival, all day long. Today will be, again, bread … tonight Oscars.

    * OK not THAT bread, but a very very very similar bread from Cooks’ Illustrated, made in a Dutch oven.

El, every time I have ever had scotch it was after wine and even just a few sips puts me into a desperate hangover situation. Horrible! Hope you’re feeling better now.

The bread didn’t rise quite enough (cold in my house…and I gave it 22 hrs) but it was still incredible.

no seeds. I spent the entire day in the kitchen instead… next weekend.

Lisa, zippers can be a real drag. Hope 3rd time was the charm! I’ve been sort of mooning away for post-menopausal life. This last cycle all came intensely in 1.5 days, very heavy, very intense, very exhausting. I’ll be 41 in a couple of months… and sense things are starting to really change. Time to get some acupuncture methinks.

Sandra, the bread is so yum!!! and super-easy. Though making it made me want to make the Rosemary Olive oil loaves I do that take 3 days and a ton of kneading (by hand). Hmmmmmm.

[...] seriously, try this bread. It’s well worth the effort, and as Sandra said in the comments on Saturday’s post, making it made her feel like a real baker. And if you’re interested in a most excellent [...]
