Kelly, I attended a workshop a few weeks ago on hydroponic gardening. Apparently cukes take very well to this method and can be started once then let go until harvest time. No watering, weeding, or work. If you want the instructions for how to do this (you grow them in a large garbage can), let me know and I'll dig them up.

Pears are *excellent* to can - I did about 60 pounds one year and they were wonderful.

Kate, the beans add a nice punch chopped up and tossed in a salad!

Becca, shelves are definitely better than cupboards. But having the shelves in a separate area is nice if you get messy like I do...I often think about taking the doors off of a few of my cabinets and painting them pretty inside, but would I keep them showcase neat? I think not.

Sandra, what's your queue? A job list? Is it a spreadsheet? Are you that organized? Oh, I'm jealous.

Angelina-I've never canned pears, but love to eat them. Yum. And yes, would be such fun to can and drink beer together in the afternoon!

Now that would be an excellent blog friend meetup. A canning party weekend! Or week, even better!

...Slurp...

We have a pantry. I like it. But the problem Becca mentions is a realistic one. I keep extras in there, candy, certain canned goods I don't use as often as other stuff. Just did a reorg of this for this purpose, as a matter of fact.

I have a "clean out the pantry" job in my queue.

We have a pantry. We were all excited about it when we bought this place. But you know, it's kind of a pain, because all the ingredients are in the pantry, but all the cooking happens in the kitchen, so you are constantly going back and forth. I feel like I'm missing some transcendent point. I guess it is nice to be able to see everything, except that everything is in our usual mess. But no, actually, that's true, now that I remember cupboards: being able to see everything on open shelves is definitely better than cupboards.

The food sounds amazing. I sometimes wish that we had a big yard where I could grow food. At least the farmer's market has a steady presence...

Kelly, that is some sexy talk you've got going there! OK, maybe it's not sexy really, so much as exciting. I love this post because I have pantry dreams too. The one I have is a tiny closet that I can just squeeze into, but the one we had when I was a kid was the best place on earth to be at any time. It was the size of a walk in closet and always filled with my mom's home canned goods as well as all of our dried goods and extra jars of strange things like mint jelly. I loved the spicy smell of it. I loved the way it smelled of wood when the whole house scorched through summer.

And, I too must can some pickles next year. Mine turned out really great (dills) and we zipped through most of our jars by December. I didn't can nearly enough of them. You totally capture what is so wonderful about home canned goods. I won't even paraphrase because it's just perfect.

I don't think I could live without canning:
pears
tomatoes
dill pickles
blackberry jam

There are, of course, a ton of other canning projects I would like to do this year too. We'll see.

I wish I lived near you.
