Moving right along
Well, Chris just called to tell me that we got the financing, so the bid goes in at lunchtime today. It’s so weird to not have my focus in the garden all of a sudden, and we’ve had such beautiful days. We switched gears so quickly, and if I didn’t know how right it feels to have finally figured out that we don’t want to do this anymore, I’d think we had issues. Which we do, of course, doesn’t everybody?
I sure do. I keep complicating matters by thinking I’ll work this garden, but this weekend Chris talked me out of planting here, and he’s right. We don’t need to add to the projects. If this goes through (which we should know tomorrow, I hope) our asses are going to be so busy we won’t know which end is up until next winter.
We’ll plant a little bit at the new place (if we get it) and get back to the regularly scheduled garden program the next year. I won’t need to buy seeds for several years, having spent close to $300 on seed for my planned market garden expansions. I just hope I’m able to harvest all of that garlic, 250 feet of it. The greens are getting so strong and hearty. I plan to add some to my pasta tonight, per Farmgirl’s instructions.
In looking at the property in the city, I can see several areas where a dozen good-sized beds can go, and I fully expect to make it to the market for the ‘07 season. Urban farming. What a hoot. I intend to just rake up all of the lasagna bed materials I’ve put down for new beds and bring it with us. I have 20# of organic seed potato that needs a home, and I don’t think I could survive the summer without chard, haricot verts, beets, basil, and tomatoes. I’m hoping Chris’ parents will let us make a couple of beds at the top of their property where the sun hits.
I know I need to come up with some better posts than these tiny-step updates, it’s just that I’m having a hard time focusing on anything else. We spent yesterday painting, scraping up super-glued wallpaper, and trying to get the improvements started. So funny, as we’re painting we’re thinking why the hell didn’t we do this sooner? Maybe then we wouldn’t have wanted to move. But then Tyler spent close to 3 hours mowing the grass, and only got 1/3 of the property cut, and we remembered why we want out. By next year the new house will only have a couple of small patches of grass suitable for laying on ones back to stare up into the tree tops and watch the clouds floating by. We could get a reel mower.
I need to get outside to take photos of the garlic, and the cold frames. The arugula and mesclun are just about ready to pick, and the spinach is getting it’s 3rd and 4th sets of leaves. I cannot wait to have our first salad, hopefully with some fresh goat cheese.
Right now I need to shut this time-suck off and finish scraping the gunk off of the last wall in the upstairs bathroom. Can I just say, amen for antibiotics? I feel almost human again.

Glad you are feeling better. With your renewed vigor, you’ll be able to push that reel mower (hooray for reel mowers!)
