Use what you have month

Use What You Have Logo The month is almost over, but because I’m thinking about art a lot lately, and seeing objects that I have around me in new ways, I’m going to jump on the use what you have month pony express. Simple Sparrow got it rolling, and my craft supply closet thanks her. Of course, I have no idea when I’ll find time to squeeze another project in, but when I do, it’ll be this:

paper for crewel designs

The background is a square linen tablecloth I found for a dollar at the thrift store last weekend. I’m going to cut it in half on the diagonal, and use half to make an apron and the other half to do some crewel-work. I’ve been hanging onto these gorgeous pieces of paper by a Swedish designer that MizUntitled sent to me last year with a box of amazing goodies. She’s amazing like that.

Almost, but not quite

daffodils

Any day now these babies are going to bust open and shine that happy yellow light on us.

Of course, today it’s spitting snow.

Equinox, update, boring post

Official Spring, and we woke to a thick coating of frost on everything. The next five days we have snow flurries forecast, and high teens to low twenties at night. I’ve been up since 6 am, my mind whirring like an over-zealous wind-up clock—plotting, planning, and trying to figure out how to squeeze three or four extra hours into the day. Will make some sort of an omelette and the beautiful organic greens I got at Kreiger’s for supper, with a light chicken stock garlic soup.

Chris got the windows mounted onto the cold frame yesterday, now we just need a couple of pieces of plexi-glass to cover the width (window about a foot too narrow.) By the weekend I’ll have it planted with spinach, mesclun, lettuce, and chard. If we don’t get any more rain, my peas and radishes will go in the ground this week too. I’m thinking I’ll just lay the seeds on top of loosened soil, then cover them with a few inches of straw. That’s what I’ll do with the potatoes too, help give them all a fighting chance against the super-wet, heavy clay soil. Last year they all rotted in the ground before they got to sprout.

Please excuse the mess

I’m still having issues with my templates in certain browsers, so am in the process of changing to a new template. Sorry if you stop in and see 75 different looks over the next couple of days while I test them out. Bloody WordPress.

Witnessed

Lila throwing herself with abandon into the spring night air:
Moon! You don’t have eyes!
Moon! You don’t have a mouf!
Moon! You don’t have a head!
Moon!
It’s Gark! It’s Gark! Gark!
Gark!
Hello Moon! You so beautifuw!

I can mark the coming of spring so clearly now, the kids are just bursting with the joyful rush of sap running in their blood, like a river overflowing its banks. They have boundless energy, and chatter all day and night.
