A bird in the hand is worth two on the bed pooping all over the duvet cover

The hatchery sent an extra bonus baby chick, so we now have 26 happy peepers in two brooder bins in the guest room. The cats are all lined up in the hall outside the door, licking their lips and waiting for the grand opening of the in-house KFC. Lila already has them learning about their role as prey, her hand swooping in and out of the bin to grab them. They all rush in a peeping emergency drill to cluster together and step on each others heads trying to get to the bottom of the pile in the corner. We have a large hawk population in this neck of the woods, so it’s probably good training.

I let her torment one biddie for a few minutes so I could get a decent photo. Boy, these are a tough subject, really hard to get them to hold a pose for more than an nnnth of a second. Even harder to get them to stay still for a kiss.

"Autumn is the eternal corrective. It is ripeness and color and a time of maturity; but it is also breadth, and depth, and distance. What man can stand with autumn on a hilltop and fail to see the span of his world and the meaning of the rolling hills that reach to the far horizon?"

Oh. My. Goodness. BOTH make adorable subjects! So envious; I’d love to keep some chickens. The budgie doesn’t make enough poop to equal decent fertilizer, sadly. But I do know all about birds as difficult subjects; fast little muthas. How long will they be in the house? And how are the cats reacting? They must be going insane.
